The upcoming ‘Naomi’ TV show will follow the steps of the comic book it’s based upon. Naomi McDuffie (played by a charismatic Kaci Walfall) is an ordinary teenager from a small town in Oregon, who after witnessing a mysterious incident involving Superman learns she has strange and fantastical abilities of her own. She finds an unlikely mentor in Dee (Alexander Wraith), a tattoo parlor owner who reveals that he is actually an alien from the planet Thanagar.

Walfall describes Dee as “kind of like her Mr. Miyagi. He really believes in her more than she can believe in herself.”

Comic fans will recognize the name Thanagar as a longtime part of the DC Universe cosmology. In many versions of the Hawkman and Hawkgirl backstory, the two hail from the planet Thanagar and use its advanced technology to fight crime.

Showrunner Jill Blankenship promises that Dee will be the first of otherworldly threats with connections to DC lore that Naomi will face, saying, “We are going deep. I’m confident DC fans will pleasantly surprised with our cosmic cameos,” she explains. “Over the season, Naomi’s world expands in such a huge way.”

“We’re telling these grounded high school stories in the midst of this epic cosmic struggle,” Blankenship added. “We’re balancing equally these two parts of Naomi’s life. It’s about Naomi’s journey to fully become herself. She’s not going to become the person she will eventually become right away. We’ll get to be with her in these moments of struggle and triumph, and victory as she learns how to be a hero. She starts to realize that this affection and affinity she has for Superman is actually rooted in something much deeper than she thought. We get to watch as she discovers in real-time [that] Superman [is] really part of her story and she’s part of his.”

‘Naomi’ premieres on Jan. 11, 2022.
